The 2028 Bergen Catholic DL’s Blue-White Weekend experience matches a growing trend among defensive prospects who see Penn State as home
2028 defensive lineman Jayden Beckley of Bergen Catholic (Oradell, NJ) has visited a number of college campuses in his recruitment process already — but something about Penn State keeps bringing him back.
His latest visit to State College for Blue-White Weekend left a particularly strong impression, and in speaking with The Program Insider, Beckley made it clear just how much the experience resonated with him.
“The visit was amazing! I was there for both Friday and Saturday. The coaches and staff spent a lot of quality time with us and did a great tour of the school. I had a great meeting with the defensive coaches and talked about the style of defense at Penn State. The energy and the fans were great at the Spring game. The talent and coaching was top-notch. The entire experience was excellent. They made me feel at home.”
Beckley, who already holds offers from Penn State, Michigan, Syracuse, and Texas A&M, is part of a growing group of underclassmen being evaluated early by major programs. The 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive lineman has already started turning heads not just with his size and strength, but with his maturity and motor on the field.
Personal touch from James Franklin
One of the moments that stood out most from Beckley’s time on campus? The direct involvement of Penn State head coach James Franklin — a sentiment echoed by numerous prospects who attended Blue-White Weekend.
“What really stood out to me was how much time Coach Franklin spent with us. He was very hands on and made himself available to us which was very good.”
Franklin’s visible presence and investment are separating Penn State in the eyes of many recruits and families.
Culture, organization, and a standard of excellence
This visit wasn’t Beckley’s first time in Happy Valley, but it marked the first time he truly explored the broader Penn State experience beyond football. His impression of the university and team structure was glowing.
“I’ve been to Penn State several times, but this was the first time I did a tour of the school. I was really impressed by the facilities and campus. They also allowed me to sit in on team meetings which was great. I really liked how organized and disciplined everything was. They really set a standard of excellence for the players.”
That standard — built on professionalism, preparation, and culture — is especially noticeable among the defensive line, where Penn State has most recently stacked elite talent in the 2025 class.

Building a defensive wall
Penn State’s recruiting momentum in the trenches has been continually fueled by early commitments from several high-upside defensive linemen in the this most recent 2025 class, including:
- Yvan Kemajou — 6’3″, 230 lbs DE out of Paint Branch High School (MD), known for his versatility and athleticism. He recorded 46 tackles and 6.5 sacks as a junior.
- Cortez Harris — 6’4″, 230 lbs EDGE from Riverdale Baptist (MD), noted for his burst off the edge and high motor.
- Chaz Coleman — 6’5″, 225 lbs ATH/EDGE from Warren G. Harding (OH), a two-way player with elite length who also played quarterback in High School.
- Max Granville — 6’3″, 229 lbs EDGE out of Fort Bend Christian Academy (TX), already shows explosiveness and a disruptive first step.
With momentum like this, Penn State is fast becoming one of the premier destinations for defensive front talent in the country.
Family culture and lifelong relationships
More than just on-field performance or facilities, what continues to set Penn State apart in the eyes of many recruits is the program’s unwavering emphasis on family, culture, and continuity. It’s not just a recruiting pitch — it’s a value system woven into everything the Nittany Lions do.
For young players like Jayden Beckley, that approach stands out. In an increasingly transactional era of college football where NIL, transfers, and rapid roster turnover dominate headlines, Penn State’s ability to maintain long-term relationships with its players — both current and former — is refreshing.
“I have always loved the culture at Penn State. It was one of the first colleges I visited. Every time I’m there, it just feels like home. it’s not just about football, it’s about building relationships for life. They really care about the players which I saw first hand with the Letterman Club. That really impressed me how they keep a connection with the players for life by letting them stand on the sidelines at any games they want to. Really awesome family vibe.”
That message is resonating across recruiting classes, especially with players like Beckley who value a sense of community and long-term development. For a defensive lineman with years still ahead of him in high school, that kind of environment creates a compelling pull — one rooted in trust, legacy, and belonging.
Scouting Beckley’s game and upside
While Beckley is still early in his high school career, he’s already logged varsity reps at one of the Northeast’s premier programs. According to MaxPreps, he recorded 3 total tackles and 1 tackle for loss as a freshman in limited action.
His national profile rose after a standout showing on the Elite Talent Academy “Elevate Your Game” Bus Tour, where he competed against top 2026 and 2027 linemen.
With three more high school seasons ahead, Beckley is just scratching the surface.
Upcoming camp schedule
As Beckley continues to grow his game and refine his skill set, the upcoming camp circuit will be a major opportunity to showcase his development against elite competition. With strong early interest from Power Five programs, he plans to stay active throughout the spring and summer.
“I will be attending camps for Penn State, Ohio, Michigan, Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Pitt. I will also be attending the Under Armour camp in NJ in May.”
Here are the scheduled stops for Beckley this offseason:
- Under Armour Camp (New Jersey): May 24, 2025
- Penn State Big Man Challenge: Expected June 2025
- Additional camp dates at Ohio State, Michigan, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, and Pitt (schedules vary by school)
Looking ahead
From James Franklin’s hands-on approach to the energy on display throughout Blue-White Weekend, Jayden Beckley’s time in Happy Valley only strengthened his bond with the program.
“They made me feel at home.”
While Beckley’s recruitment is just beginning, Penn State has already made it clear: the door is open, and the foundation for something special is in place.
